ABOUT THE COURSE

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a comprehensive mindfulness-informed intervention for addressing emotional dysregulation as it manifests in a variety of diagnoses. DBT can be used as a stand-alone intervention, or its numerous components (particularly the skills) can be utilized within a comprehensive paradigm of trauma focused care. DBT skills have long been integrated alongside EMDR therapy, especially in Preparation (Phase 2). In this course, participants will gain deeper insight into just how much DBT and EMDR have in common, and consider a richer array of applications for how one can support the other. Participants will learn and apply a multitude of DBT skills and concepts alongside EMDR therapy Phases 2, 7, and 8. Explore how DBT skills and concepts can assist EMDR therapists to work with complicated scenarios related to abreaction, dissociation, and complex trauma within Phases 3-6 of the standard EMDR protocol. Connections between AIP and biosocial theory (DBT) also highlighted, with implications for client history (Phase 1) and case conceptualization explored. Several case studies of how DBT skills were successfully integrated into EMDR therapy are explored throughout the presentation drawing on the presenters’ clinical experiences.

You have read our EMDR Therapy Training information page prior to registering. Please also note that by taking the training in this online format, you will be required to take a quiz following the second part of the training, per EMDRIA guidelines.

 

  • Payment: Purchase of this training can be broken up into one, two, or three payments USD, with the first being due at the time of purchase, the second one month later, and the final payment a month after that.   • Refund/Cancellation Policy: You have read and agree to ICM's Organizational Policies, which stipulate the terms for refunds, cancellations, and resolving grievances and disputes.

 

  • Consultation: The EMDRIA-required 10 consultation hours are not included in the cost of online training. We structure our program so that you are able to work with any of our ICM approved consultants or consultants in training for consultation hours to supplement the online training. Our consultants represent a wide range of specialties at a variety of price points. In the spirit of ICM's mission, emphasizing trauma-focused care and tailoring the most effective program for our individual trainees, we believe the choice of consultant is important to the overall learning experience.

 

  • Correspondence from Training Organization: The Institute for Creative Mindfulness regularly sends correspondence about the training, including an email confirmation at registration and several emails leading up to each training. The emails presently come from [email protected]. Additionally, The Institute for Creative Mindfulness may send out emails from [email protected]. If you are not receiving these emails, you are required to check your Spam folder as correspondence from new organizations often ends up there. Once you receive your first correspondence, please save the email to your address book. If you have not received a confirmation email or other correspondence from the organization within seven days of the event, it is your responsibility to reach out to us by email or phone.

 

  • Additional Reading Requirements: Please take note of the EMDR Therapy Training Reading List. EMDRIA requires that you purchase and read Francine Shapiro's Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy, Third Edition: Basic Principles, Protocols, and Procedures, which is available for purchase at Amazon and other retailers.

 

  • Professionalism: You will show up on time and be fully present for each session, acting in a professional manner. You will reach out to your faculty member or any assistants if any unexpected problems arise. Staying present for online learning can come with its unique set of challenges, and you agree to take full responsibility for addressing your needs in the area of grounding and self-care during the training. You agree to refrain from all alcohol and illicit drug use during the training and agree to speak with your faculty member or an assistant if you anticipate that your impairment due to prescribed medications might pose a problem during the training. The faculty and staff reserve the right to remove trainees at any time if the trainee creates an unsafe or unprofessional environment for you or for other trainees, or for any other reason, at their sole discretion.

 

  • Confidentiality: There is no client relationship or other privilege that would create a duty rising to the level of clinical confidentiality in this training setting; however, you are expected to respect the confidentiality of other trainees in the group, and your trainer will explain the importance of confidentiality. Trainees who observe a problem with another trainee are expected to bring the problem to the lead trainer or other training staff. Similarly, if a staff member observes an issue with professionalism, they reserve the right to discuss that issue with the lead trainer.

 

  • Preparedness for Doing Your Own Work: Throughout the training, you will be expected to participate in a working practicum experience in the role of therapist, client, and observer. This means that you will be expected to do a small piece of your own, authentic clinical work. If you are currently in counseling or being treated for a mental health condition, it is recommended that you speak with your provider, alerting them that you are participating in the training. If you have received a major mental health diagnosis (past or present), you acknowledge that you are taking this training and engaging in this practicum at your own risk, and agree to alert faculty or training staff before or during the training if any complications arise. You acknowledge that everyone taking part in the practicum experience is new to EMDR therapy and agree to keep the space as safe as possible for all involved. If any problems arise, you agree to address them with faculty or staff members.

Objectives

After this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the history of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), theoretical perspectives, skills, interventions, and framework

  2. Compare and contrast the biosocial theory of emotions (DBT) with the adaptive information processing (AIP) model of EMDR

  3. Discuss applications of this comparison/contrast to Phase 1 (Client History) in EMDR and overall case conceptualization

  4. Teach 5-7 DBT skills to clients, as well as giving and reviewing meaningful homework assignments

  5. Integrate these skills into EMDR therapy Phases 2 & 7 and implement homework into Phase 7 & 8

  6. Apply DBT skills related to grounding, mindfulness, and distress tolerance in navigating difficult situations in EMDR therapy (e.g., dissociation, abreaction, complex PTSD)

  7. Increase confidence in ability to identify and solve common problems in clinical treatment through a fusion of the DBT and EMDR therapy frameworks


About the Instructor

ICM Founder & Director Jamie Marich

Dr. Jamie Marich (she/they/we) began her career as a humanitarian aid worker in Bosnia-Hercegovina from 2000-2003, primarily teaching English and music. Jamie travels internationally teaching on topics related to trauma, EMDR therapy, expressive arts, mindfulness, and yoga, while maintaining a private practice and online education operations in her home base of Akron, OH. Marich is the founder of the Institute for Creative Mindfulness and the developer of the Dancing Mindfulness approach to expressive arts therapy. Marich is the author of EMDR Made Simple: 4 Approaches for Using EMDR with Every Client (2011), Trauma and the Twelve Steps: A Complete Guide for Recovery Enhancement (2012), Creative Mindfulness (2013), Trauma Made Simple: Competencies in Assessment, Treatment, and Working with Survivors, Dancing Mindfulness: A Creative Path to Healing and Transformation (2015), and Process Not Perfection: Expressive Arts Solutions for Trauma Recovery (2019). Marich co-authored EMDR Therapy & Mindfulness for Trauma-Focused Care along with colleague Dr. Stephen Dansiger in 2018, and their new book with Springer Publishing Healing Addiction with EMDR Therapy: A Trauma-Focused Guide released in 2021. North Atlantic Books published a revised and expanded edition of Trauma and the 12 Steps in the Summer of 2020, and they released The Healing Power of Jiu-Jitsu: A Guide to Transforming Trauma and Facilitating Recovery in 2022. Her latest release with North Atlantic Book, Dissociation Made Simple: A Stigma-Free Guide to Embracing Your Dissociative Mind and Navigating Life came out in January 2023. She has three more projects in the works with North Atlantic Books, including her personal memoir about surviving spiritual abuse called You Lied to Me About God, due out in Autumn 2024. The Huffington Post published her personal story of being out as a clinical professional with a dissociative disorder in May 2023. The New York Times featured Marich’s writing and work on Dancing Mindfulness in 2017 and 2020. NALGAP: The Association of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Addiction Professionals and Their Allies awarded Jamie with their esteemed President’s Award in 2015 for her work as an LGBT advocate. The EMDR International Association (EMDRIA) granted Jamie the 2019 Advocacy in EMDR Award for her using her public platform in media and in the addiction field to advance awareness about EMDR therapy and to reduce stigma around mental health. Jamie also sits on the editorial board of the EMDR Journal of Practice and Research, and she was the 2008 winner of the Poster Research Award at the EMDRIA Annual Conference.

About the Instructor

ICM Adjunct Faculty Rachel Weaver

Rachel Weaver MSW, LISW-S, LICDC-CS, DBTC, REAT, RMT, RYT-200 graduated from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and a Master’s degree in Clinical Social Work. Rachel has worked with children, teens, adults, the elderly, and groups since 2006. She has been employed as a clinician, supervisor, educator, and clinical director in community mental health agencies, private practices, universities, colleges, and substance abuse agencies. Presently, she is a Social Work lecturer/professor, clinical internship liaison, and supervisor at The Ohio State University. She is also the owner and CEO of WiseMind Consulting & Wellness LLC, a consulting, mental health, and wellness private practice in Columbus, OH. As a social work and chemical dependency supervisor, Rachel provides ongoing guidance and supervision to students, interns, and clinicians; both within and outside of her private practice. Expanding knowledge within the field, she presents continuing education workshops on topics such as DBT, EMDR, supervision, ethics, cultural humility, DSM-5, and many more. Her certifications and training include: -First woman in the state of Ohio certified in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBTC) -Certified in EMDR (and an EMDRIA Approved Consultant) -Certified Dancing Mindfulness Facilitator -Registered Expressive Arts Therapist -Registered Yoga Teacher 200hr Regarding integrative and healing modalities, Rachel is an ordained minister/reverend through The Church Of Radiant Lights and is approved to perform marriages within the state of Ohio. She is also a Reiki Master-Teacher. Rachel believes that holistic, complementary, and alternative treatment approaches make for the best outcomes and sustained recovery. Lastly, Rachel is currently a doctoral student getting her Ph.D. in Integrative Health & Psychology.
